It’s official! The IOC (International Olympics Committee) has voted unanimously to bring in skateboarding as one of five new ‘sports’ to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
This topic has fueled a debate in skateboarding like no other. So we are going to give you a insight to the fuel that keeps this subject blazing! First of all it’s this writers opinion that skateboarding is NOT a sport but a lifestyle and a tool in which to teach any rider life lessons. For instance, it teaches you that life isn’t impossible. If you want it bad enough, you will find a way to land it…. push your limits. Yes that can be said with sports too but lets be realistic. Sports have rules, technique and uniforms. Skateboarding is a individualistic achievement that pushes one another (hence the game of s.k.a.t.e).
Do I think that this will propel the lifestyle into a bigger market, hell yes I do! This is going to boost sales of all skateboarding products to the point of being unaffordable to every child around the world. As it is, we have shoes that went from being around $50 a pair to Nike SB’s at $120+. All in the name of paying $20mil contracts. I could go on for hours with this so …… I will just go onto the facts.
The cats that are riding and making a great living skateboarding want to see this move as far as it can. The people who do not make the money wanna see it as it always was, fun in the streets with their lads. No rules. Now don’t get me wrong. I’m curious to see how this goes because I work in the skateboard industry. Will this boost the community or will it destroy?
Another factor to put in place is the reminder that drug testing will be present in the Olympics. Now if you are new to our lifestyle, there is something you need to be aware of. Drugs run rampant with 90% of us in the industry. For more than one reason! If you have ever been on a pro tour then you know what I’m talking about. Most of these skaters are hopped up on pain killers, speed and marijuana. That’s to just name a few altering substances. So to find 80 individuals that will remain sober and clean long enough to pass the screening will be a hard task! In my touring days, I have been just as guilty. Shit there’s days I still skate and drop a lude just to kill the pain in my knees. So who are we going to find to fill the spots?
Don’t take the simple rants rants from me….. head to the social media outlets and see what’s being said. You will find that there is more against this union than for.
